Cats often react to changes in territory, smell, noise and handling. Preparation cannot remove every stressor, but it can help the clinic understand the cat and make the journey more predictable.

Make the carrier part of the home

When possible, leave the carrier open in a familiar area rather than introducing it only on appointment day. Add familiar bedding and avoid forcing the cat in at the last moment.

Before leaving home

  • Ask whether food, water or medication should change before the visit.
  • Bring medication and previous records.
  • Record intermittent signs safely when a photo or video may help.
  • Tell the clinic about severe travel or handling stress before arrival.

At a cat-friendly clinic

A separate cat waiting area may reduce exposure to dogs and movement. Keep the carrier stable and covered if that helps your cat, and follow the team’s handling instructions rather than opening it in an unsecured area.
